The Chronicle of His Major Activities



Comrade Sunny Ofehe, an environmental and human rights activist from the Niger Delta region of Nigeria living in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

1993:

He played an active role in mobilizing fellow students to demonstrate against the annulment of June 12, 1993 Presidential election by the then Military Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.

1995:

He fled Nigeria in the wake of the agitation for the June 12th annulled Presidential election, which agitated the hanging of Ken Saro Wiwa and 8 other Ogoni activists. He sought for political asylum in Amsterdam, Netherlands and arrived at the Schiphol airport 27th November 1995.

2005:

His advocacy for the Niger Delta region began in Netherlands. He was invited to several events and conferences. In this year, he founded an NGO “Hope for Niger Delta Campaign” (advocacy, events and awareness campaign organisation), headquartered in Rotterdam Netherland.

                                 

2007:

October 4th, assailants suspected to be hired assassins invaded his family house in Benin-City and strangled his 60-year-old mother to death, which was buried almost 10 years after, in February 2017.

In the same year, he was stopped by the Nigerian DSS at the Nigerian airport, and was interrogated several times over his activities, criticism of multinational and government policies around the world.

2008:

In September, he began series of documentary films on the Niger Delta showcasing the untold stories of the region, using them to campaign for peace. In December, during the documentary production, he visited the camp of the popular militant group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), to call for a peaceful process to resolving the Niger Delta.

The process of peace was established by the Nigerian government through the granting of the Presidential Amnesty to all Niger Delta Militants.
                                               
2009:

He was invited by the acting President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as part of my consultation to finding an enduring solution to the perennial problems of the Niger Delta. During this period, he addressed the Ad-Hoc Committee on the Niger Delta at the Nigeria House of Representative, and 15 Honorable Members of the Committee led by Hon. Abdul Ningi were eventually invited by the Netherlands and European Union Parliament and Commission in Brussels, Belgium.
